Getting Enough Vitamin D?

Avoiding excess UV exposure and applying sunscreen regularly has left many Americans with a vitamin D shortage. Why does this matter?

Vitamin D is riddled with imperative gifts to mankind. It reduces the likelihood of diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and cancer. It is directly tied to a long life span and stronger bone structure. Getting enough of the sunshine vitamin may also pay off in having a trimmer waist-line. The more vitamin D circulating in the bloodstream, the lower a person’s body weight reports one study published in the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

The Institute of Medicine suggests a minimum daily intake of 200 to 400 IU for both children and adults. However, many experts believe that higher levels of vitamin D are both safe ad beneficial. Keep in mind if you use a stand-alone vitamin D product you are probably getting the standard 200 to 400 IU. Sun exposure and food will also contribute to your body’s supply. In fact, your body can MAKE 10,000 IU of vitamin D in just 20 to 30 minutes of exposure. Factory workers who sit outside for their lunch hour get enough when they roll up their sleeves and let the sun reach their hands and forearms and face for half an hour.

Food sources of vitamin D include fish, fortified milk (remember milk is a residue food), and eggs. Go to and learn how to literally eat sunlight as humankind once did through their eyes. You can learn as I have to do this. It’s free and complete and eventually you do not need to consume food when you reach 45 minutes a day.

Too much of a good thing? Sun lovers won’t overdose on vitamin D; this vitamin doesn’t increase to toxic levels no matter how much sun exposure you get. The body has fail-safe measures in place to guard against excess skin production of this vital nutrient.
